Work introduction
Servant Songs – This piano music reflects the composer’s interpretation of the biblical fragments from the Book of Isaiah, the prophet.
The composition is intended as songs without words, and it refers to the situation of the human who prays and awaits the answer.
The hero can be represented as an individual or a group that is chosen for difficult actions in life. The music emphasizes the following scenes:
1) (Is 42) God's selection of the servant who will bring justice, and rules of religion, to earth.
2) (Is 49) The victory is in God's hands.
3) (Is 50) Despite suffering, the hero will endure and prevail with God’s help.
4) (Is 52) The Servant prays for others, bearing their penalties.
In the composition, the piano is used to sing the melodic sentences and to show the surroundings (i.e. absurdly contrasting birds singing despite the sorrowful situation). The piano texture in all movements refers to the dialog. This dialog is uneven when a small and weak person talks to the powerful, almighty. Such conversation is presented in a way that combines time, forms, and chords, creating harmonic and motivic content movement. This can be identified and heard in the arpeggiated clusters, that requires pressing multiple keys with one finger.
Performers Note: The accidentals belong to the notes in whole measure at the same octave.
