Work introduction
While developing some large chords and accompanying musical lines, I imagined the calmness I often feel when the sun is about to sink into the horizon. As the sun is sinking, you will see a city skyline, a hillside or mountain more as an outline and a shape against the lighter background. As I moved my chords and melodic lines around with small changes or I put them in another key or a slightly changed tonal environment, I was more and more inspired by the feeling of watching sunset silhouettes and their gradual changes. Just before the sun is sinking in the horizon the silhouettes darken very fast. This is reflected in the last part of this first piece: «Sunset Silhouettes.
Shadows are very similar to Silhouettes. While silhouettes are backlit objects, shadows are cast by objects that block the light. Having finished Sunset Silhouettes, I continued playing with a little musical motif, moving it around like a game of hide and seek. While I let this “catch me if you can” motif dance around, I came to think about dancing shadows. After more work, introducing some sharper dissonances and some contrasting sections, I now had a second part. “Dancing Shadows." With the two together we have “Silhouettes and Shadows for piano."
