Work introduction
Peter Keuschnig asked me to choose a piece by Alexander Zemlinsky and arrange it for his Ensemble Kontrapunkte to play in one of its concerts in 2013. I selected the Sinfonietta because I thought it eminently suitable for such an arrangement. Apart from that, it is one of Zemlinsky’s works which could perhaps find a place in the repertoire of various chamber orchestras and ensembles in this smaller orchestration (my arrangement can also be performed with a small group of strings).
While working on the piece I tried to let the original show through wherever possible; where it was not, I re-orchestrated it thoroughly without, however, changing the harmonies and the structure. I deliberately dispensed with percussion, deciding instead on a piano part for accentuation. In principle, my intention was to conjure up an ensemble piece from an orchestra work – to create a version which would not be a diminishment but an autonomous ensemble work, another view of the original.
