The composer sought inspiration from the story of “The Emperor and the Assassin” in the Warring States Period of China (475-221 B.C.). The story includes a powerful and heroic scene: the warriors of Yan singing and dancing to bid farewell to Jing Ke at the Yishui river.
The sleeve dagger was a melee weapon used by ancient assassins, and the dance implied the assassin in danger. The “Warriors Dance” features the ancient warriors, and the music is an expression of brave struggle, sacrifice and heroic spirit.
