Work introduction
My second string quartet was written on an afternoon in Berlin in the summer of 2017. When I observed that my calmness was crumbling due to my constant vital insecurity, I remembered this beautiful poem by Octavio Paz:
"Wind, Water, Stone"
The water pierces the stone,
the wind disperses the water,
the stone stops the wind.
Water, wind, stone.
The wind carves the stone
the stone is the cup of water,
the water escapes and it is wind.
Stone, wind, water.
The wind in its turns sings,
the water as it walks murmurs,
the motionless stone is silent.
Wind, water, stone.
One is another and is none:
between their empty names
pass and fade
water, stone, wind."
"Viento, agua, piedra»
El agua horada la piedra,
el viento dispersa el agua,
la piedra detiene al viento.
Agua, viento, piedra.
El viento esculpe la piedra,
la piedra es copa del agua,
el agua escapa y es viento.
Piedra, viento, agua.
El viento en sus giros canta,
el agua al andar murmura,
la piedra inmóvil se calla.
Viento, agua, piedra.
Uno es otro y es ninguno:
entre sus nombres vacíos
pasan y se desvanecen
agua, piedra, viento."
