Work introduction
The first of Haubenstock-Ramati’s two string trios bears the subtitle Ricercari. An early work from 1948, a new version appeared in 1978. The composition is founded on elements of early polyphony; a twelve-tone row is the basis but it is handled relatively freely, since the composer preferred athematic work even at that stage. In the third and last part of the miniature-like short work, he addresses the problem of simultaneous repetition of several unequal cycles as a form-generating process for the first time – the system led in later works to the invention of the “dynamically closed” variable form.
