Work introduction
Symphonic Mobile I is scored for 6 Flutes (I and II doubling piccolo), 2 Alto Flutes, and 1 Bass Flute. Flute VI must have a low B. The altos, bass, and piccolos are transposed in the score.
The form of the piece is somewhat variable. The piece must begin with First Refrain, and end with Final Refrain. The remaining five movements may be played in any order. If a shorter version is desired, one or two of the central movements may be omitted. Each of the five central movements also includes a statement of the Refrain (in Monolith the Refrain appears in the middle of the movement). If an ensemble presents more than one performance of the work, it is suggested that a different arrangement of movements be used each time.
