Work introduction
"The First Day of Summer" got its title because it was completed on the first day of Summer, June 21, 2019. It starts out with an easy-going blues-styled theme, reminding us of the slower-paced summer days to come. During the course of the work, there are more dramatic and intense sections, evoking the passion and excitement generated by the summer heat. "The First Day of Summer" was a semi-finalist in the 2021-2022 American Prize in Chamber Music Composition and was recorded on an award-winning album entitled "Teth" by the Phasma Quartet (Iwona Glinka, flute; Yaroslav Tokarev, violin; Ilias Sdoukos, viola and Renato Ripo, 'cello) on the Phasma Music Label (distributed by Naxos.) The audio example is from that album.
