Work introduction
For Anna, who knows how to make the dream palpable in the rocks, which she carves!
I have written this work under the influence of very positive aspects: divinely, the birth of my second son Eduard and the fact that the interpreter of the premiere would be Anna-Maria Maak.
This composition completes the dramaturgical arc of my occupation with the Bach topic: I have used elements of each movement of the second Partita for violin solo - nearly in the same order, only with an exchange of the Ciaconna and the Gigue - and I have applied different compositional processes to tame the sound material and take it along the paths of my personal creative style to build a luminous metaphor.
For me, as a native of Latin America, the division between the so-called 'academic music' and 'popular music' is very little relevant. My sound world is nourished by Bach, Beethoven or Schumann, as well as a folk song, a funky 'tumbao', some inspired singer-songwriter, Duke Ellington and other giants.
Some examples of the musical bridges created in the piece are: Bachs music transforms into a 'funky' style, a romantic bagatelle transmutes into a jazz standard, a Sarabande of the famous Thomaskantor becomes a 'palo flamenco' with sparks of rock music. The last minutes of RESPLENDENCES are a celebration of Venezuelan music (famous melodies and rhythms), including a quote of Bachs BWV 1052 (like the beginning!), this time played in a 'Joropo style'. So, here and there, the listener can find a lot of musical riddles…
THE PLACE OF THE RESPLENDENCES was a joy to compose, because the work has given me the pretext to create a coherent universe, starting from apparently dissimilar elements. To quote the phrase of the remarkable South American poet Mario Benedetti: „Y así entre todos logran lo que era un imposible“ (And thus together we achieve what was supposed to be impossible!).
