Work introduction
Among the disruptions to my life caused by the Covid pandemic of 2020 was the impossibility what had become an annual visit to London in August, which for several years included a concert at Kansas Smitty’s, a bar run by the band of the same name, one of whose founders was the wonderful clarinet player Giacomo Smith, my friend who had been a theory student of mine at Boston University. The name of these pieces was suggested by an episode of the Democratic National Convention that summer. Aside from the sentiment suggested by the title, the piece is also influenced in one way or another by my thoughts about the Schumann Fantasy Pieces, which Giacomo and I had played several times.
