Work introduction
What shall I say about the picturesque and elegant harp. It is, in my opinion, the pre-eminent classical orchestral instrument. It has a very rich resonant tone. It has a popular and long history. It is present in almost all parts of the world. It has had a long venerated career and employment in Western classical orchestras starting with the Romantic era. In its present incarnation the chromatic pedal harp has been holding down a job, in orchestras, for hundreds of years. Its position in world cultural history is universally inclusive.
Its tone color and expressivity is one of a kind. The harp can champion a technique and tone which is exquisite, dexterous, agreeable, fluid and satisfying. Its tone color projects a distinctive beauty and brings a full-bodied hue to the melange of an orchestral tapestry. It’s also a very capable solo instrument. A composer just needs to know the harp as well as her or she knows their mother.
This opinion of harp ability reflects my music aesthetic, my personal understanding of the artistic potential and distinctive aptness and potentiality of the harp. I am not interested in making sounds with harp compositions. I am interested in making music with harp compositions.
My piece “3 Short Pieces For Harp” reflects my deep appreciation and love for this most renowned and illustrious instrument of the classical orchestra.
The full score is in A4. Parts are in A3 format.
