The Toccata is a virtuoso piano work with strong public appeal representing a very suitable competition and encore piece.
This expressive composition is opened by brilliant chord repetitions contrasting with an almost impressionist-style, cantabile middle section. The finale is characterized by the mechanical atmosphere of the beginning. After a varied interplay of various timbres, bitonal effects and harmonic-rhythmic frictions, the composition ends in an impressive chord cascade.
