Work introduction
The string quartet "Wanderer" was commissioned by the Caravaggio Quartet in 2017/18 to mark the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert's death and was premiered at the "Schubertiade 2019" in Riehen near Basel. The work was to have a reference to the "Wanderer Fantasy".
Apart from a few very short quotations from it, I referred to the poem "Der Wanderer" by Georg Philipp Schmidt von Lübeck, which also inspired Franz Schubert in the composition of his "Wanderer Fantasy".
On the one hand, it is this poem that creates the reference to Schubert; on the other hand, it is the tiny quotations from the magnificent, even magical "Wanderer Fantasy" that light up again and again like bright sparks.
Schubert himself is this “Wanderer”, this traveller: the lonely, the wandering, the homeless, the outcast, the stranger, the outsider in inner emigration.
The quartet "Wanderer" was created in this spirit and is my personal homage to the great Viennese composer.
How much poorer the world would be today without him.
