Work introduction
SATB anthem with oboe accompaniment. It is based on the text by William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898). The text was written in 1865 and in the public domain, and only a few minor alterations are employed in order to fit the words more closely to the tune. The oboe part is more of an embellishment than an accompaniment after the first verse. The metronome markings are only a guide, and the choosing of the tempo should be influenced by the acoustical environment and the abilities of the choir and instrumentalist to be together so that it is a "clean" performance. The music should have a lilt but in a subtle manner, and it should never sound choppy. The music is compatible for a concert or a worship service. Duration is 3 minutes.
