Work introduction
Zamolxis has a pentapartite structure, being inspired by Remer Ra’s book The laws of Zamolxe.
The first part aims to create a sound universe with archaic, archetypal resonances. For this purpose, simplicity and a certain primitivism are pursued throughout the part, the use of a mode with limited number of sounds contributing to the creation of a sound world in which linear temporality is suspended. The second part is contrasting first of all at the level of temporality, which becomes linear, by the presence of a stable pulsation. Throughout the whole part, an attempt is made to dynamically balance some polar pairs pursued at the level of timbre, densities or registers. The third part paints a special sound world, through the pizzicatos of the strings, through the etheric harmonic sounds and due to the muted sound of the trumpet. The fourth part brings back the more turbulent atmosphere encountered in the second part. Inspired by the myth of the eternal return, the last part evokes the expression of the first part of the work.
Zamolxis is dedicated to Sergiu Carstea, who performed it for the first time on October 2, 2014 with the string orchestra of the Mihail Jora Philharmonic from Bacau conducted by Ovidiu Balan.
