Biography
Luis Saglie's academic training as a composer, conductor and pianist was formalized in the United States (UCLA - University of California, Los Angeles) and Europe (MUK - Music and Arts University Vienna / Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität - Hochschule für Musik und dartellende Kunst - Vienna, Austria), earning him a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Musical Composition. With over twelve years experience as a University Professor in three different countries, he has held positions as Head of Composition Department and Music Director/Conductor. Having held extended residencies in seven countries has planted in the composer a lacking sense of belonging to a particular culture as well as a true self-identity. Nevertheless, this has proven to be a formidable advantage towards his development as a composer resulting in a universal stamp for his music which has reached audiences with performances throughout five continents. Internationally, Luis Saglie has been the recipient of composition prizes, jury member at composition and piano competitions, acted as curator for music festivals and has had his music recorded on various CD labels.
About the music
Having held extended residencies in seven countries has allowed Luis Saglie to absorb and nourish himself from an array of multiple cultures. This reality has served as a strong factor in establishing the identity of his music. As a whole, it is set on ever present complex and irregular rhythmic attributes as well as being heavily chromatic while hinting at free tonality and modality. Balancing this are concepts of past musical traditions set in a new and personalised musical language. All of these characteristics set the stage for the composer's music to present itself as theatrical and programmatic at heart. Although dense and complex at its core, Saglie's music is always transparent enough for it to reach both the academic and the general public.
PIANO CONCERTO No.1, "The Kookaburra Concerto" - Recently Completed Work
Luis Saglie's PIANO CONCERTO No.1 has been written for pianist Alexandra Silocea and conductor Alejandra Urrutia. Both international artists are projecting its World Premiere.
