Work introduction
This bagatelle has three small pieces and is composed by mixing several aspects of international music.
The first movement is based on the trio in the same instrumentation by Debussy, and I intend to express the colorful harmony like his masterpieces. The second movement is written based on the impression of the Japanese traditional song “Oiwake,” where I used some special techniques like Shakuhachi in the flute part and combined them with the wavy motion of a viola.
The last rhythmical movement is written in 13/16 (this sounds rather difficult to play at a glance but actually is not so difficult), and the trio part, similar to jazz blues, is based on the melody of the gospel song, “You gotta move.”
This piece was commissioned and premiered by Musa Kawasaki Hall in 2022.
