Work introduction
This work bares its title with two concepts in mind. One is to set the foundation for the work to give off the sensation of actually being in and travelling through Outer Space. The other is literal in its connection to the meaning of the word and the physical space and time from note to note. This composition is a response from the composer to his self-realisation that his music up to then had set its identity a bit too firmly within parameters of complex rhythm and dense harmonic sonorities. Although perhaps against his spontaneous approach to musical creativity, the composer embarked on the composition of this work with the pre-set notion that he would only resort to whole note, half note, quarter note and eight note values throughout the entire piece. As a result, this ended up becoming a direct homage to the composer’s life-long curiosity and admiration for outer space and interplanetary travel. Although not forming part of any performance notes in the score, on the night of it’s world premiere, the composer offered a pre-concert lecture where he invited the audience to receive this work with closed eyes and inner stillness, allowing the music and their inner self to connect and experience their own momentary travel through the cosmos. This was accompanied with a second request of having the lights of the hall half dimmed.
