Work introduction
Children’s piece [Meta-Physics] can be described as composed silence. It invites adolescents, but also adults, to explore silence, to uncover hidden things, to carry the shadow into the Platonic sunlight. The work stimulates questioning: Why do many actions lead nowhere? What is silence? What lies beyond? Be aware, there are many worlds hidden inside and outside the physical. They are explored by philosophy and science; but can also be approached in an intuitive way through the inexpressible language of art. Because it rips apart the supposed laws of the world, confronts logic with poetry and elevates presumed ugliness to infinite beauty.
What is necessary to perform this work?
Most of the requested actions are barely perceptible or, respectively, close to the absolute threshold of hearing. Some actions also seem to cause nothing at all. This is intended. Additionally, moments of absolute silence occur. In this case, try to listen to what is starting to talk around you. If this is difficult for you, practice with open windows and consider the sounds you can hear as part of the music. They are supposed to be a substitute for the noises of the audience in a performance. You may, for instance, use a stop watch or listen to a metronome over headphones. Accidentals only apply to the note they directly precede. If the piece is performed as part of a concert, a recording of the street sounds outside the concert hall is produced on the day of the concert and the piece mixed with this material. This recording is played backwards, transposed upwards by two octaves, supplemented by a long convolution reverb (7 sec.) and played back at low intensity. In addition, the piano and the audience are picked up via AB omnidirectional microphones positioned in the room and modified by the same convolution reverb with a slightly lower length (5 sec.).
