Über die Musik
I find it as hard to describe my music as to describe myself. One strand of it deals with pre-existing material which is manifested at differing levels, and there fore with differing degrees of recognizability, from the surface of the music. Another strand is triadic, but not, at least in any traditional sense, "tonal". Yet another is closer to the style of more traditional music. Ciao, Lee is a movement of an as yet unfinished work for bassoon, string trio, vibraphone, and cymbals, called Only Living, whose material is derived from a hymn-tune of Justin Morgan. Peaches and Penumbras shares material with a setting I was working on at the time of a poem by Allen Ginsburg. The Bear's Lullaby was written at Greenwood Music Camp. I was living in a house in the middle of the woods, and coming home at night, I was afraid of running into rabid raccoons, or bears.
