Description
Orchestral color is paramount. I know the strings are considered the heart of the orchestra but I can’t help but prefer woodwinds over strings. For me this fondness for winds exists simply because there exists a waterfall of endless treasures waiting to be extracted by the colors of the woodwinds. Personally I would never think of the woodwinds as being a secondary element in the vast universe of orchestration. I do not see woodwinds playing second fiddle to the strings or any other instrumental section. The winds are the focal point for the birth of my music.
The woodwinds are the soul of my musical journey. From my long and often difficult process of personal musical growth, change and development the winds sing out to me at the most important and obvious artful intersections. Concerning my score “Fantasia e Capiccio for 10 Winds And Marimba” it is nothing short of a penchant a lively predisposition for the timbres of an ever changing woodwind amalgamate. For me, the woodwinds are the impact players within the thoroughfares of the fascinating and compelling orchestral metropolis.
I always strive to make beautiful artful music. Every time I begin a new work I start with the woodwinds and then move on from there. As the title implies “Fantasia e Capiccio for 10 Winds And Marimba” this piece is an exercise in dexterity an etude in fantasy and whim. It never quits. It never lets up. Cadences are at a minimum. And all the while the timbral colors of the woodwind ensemble are speeding along with a spry and fun-loving momentum.
I wondered if this piece would function properly or task practically. But then, I remembered Steve Reich’s “Music For 18 Musicians” and my doubts vanished.
The full score is formatted to A3 and the parts are formatted to A4.
