"This quiet, four-part funeral music was created from a spontaneous sketch from 17 December 2021, the first anniversary of the death of my father-in-law Krzysztof Krzywo, who died within a few weeks after a short, serious illness. When Łukasz Zimnik , solo flutist of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Katowice, approached me on that December day with a request for a piece for solo alto flute, a vision for the present piece in its entirety immediately formed. In the autumn of the following year, I shaped the spontaneous sketch into its final form. Only a short time later, the Epitaphs were premiered at the 8th Polish Flute Meeting by Łukasz Zimnik.
Throughout his life, I admired my father-in-law's unconditional care with which he devoted himself to his various passions, never did things by halves and was always fully focussed. One of his great passions was music, another was the forest and hunting - he combined the two by teaching himself to play the hunting horn at some point, even trying to compose little pieces for it. And so, after the more chromatic, dissonant passages of the preceding mournful movements, a distant echo of this nature-sounding forest music can be heard in the last Epitaphium, like a conciliatory shadow."
