Although women played a role as musicians and composers early in history, they were hardly noticed. In the world of composing, which was male-dominated for centuries, the poet-musician Sappho (610-650 B.C.), Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) or Clara Schumann (1819-1896), for example, were active.

Too many female composers have unjustly gone unnoticed, often forgotten, and only the works of a few women can be found on the concert programs of the great concert halls.

Often women* were forbidden to make music, to compose or to conduct, apart from the impossibility of ever receiving a professional musical education. Nevertheless, the list of female composers in the history of music is considerably long.

In the upcoming weeks, we would like to introduce various female composers* and draw attention to their works.
