Vivaldi used numerous onomatopoeic depictions of nature in his “Four Seasons”. In doing so, he created a new concept of “program music”, which continued to have an effect into the 19th century via Haydn or Beethoven's Pastorale.
In an extended version, the composer prefaced the concertos with the four sonnets depicting the seasons and added notes indicating which lines of text belong to which sections of the music.
